This is an important photo. Seated at the head of the table is Frank Moyle Wangemann '72. Frank was the president of Alpha Delt when I was a first semester freshman, so this photo would have most likely been taken in the fall of 1971. Frank was one of the most colorful guys to ever wear the badge of Alpha Delta Phi. He wore a tie and tails often, and was one of the few who I recall ever owning a real top hat (and he often wore it). Seated to his immediate left is Andy Higgins, Frank's girlfriend, who went to Colgate. Andy was a great lady and we all liked her a lot. Seated to Andy's left is Clif Lewis. At the very lower right hand corner of the photo, I believe, is Steve Strang '74 with his back to the camera. Steve had a unique cut to his jaw and I believe that's him. I am pretty sure that the brother whose head is cut off, and only the upper portion is visible, is Ed Miccinati '74. Sadly, Frank was killed in a car accident right around New Year's Day of 1976. Those of us who knew him were crushed. A real flame was extinguished when that happened.

This photo was taken right after initiation in either April or May of 1972.

Seated on the floor, left to right; Rodney Zelinka '75, Hurl Minnig '75 (left Cornell), Jim Gibbs '75, Peter Fifield '75, Chris Rutland '75, Dan Blumen '75 (left Cornell)

Second row, seated: Sylvan Palmer ('74 I think but he left after two years to go to Med School at Hopkins), Jim Vaughn '72, Tom Bower '73, Frank Wangemann '72 (died January 1976), Kirk Brown '74, Doug Jimerson '73, Tim Lynch '74 (a very successful restauranteur in Boston)

Commentary by Mike Zak '75

Seated at the table, playing Backgammon and facing the camera, is Robert Hale Andrew '71 (I think) who was at Cornell in the six-year Ph.D. program. A brilliant guy. Standing behind him, to Bob's left, is Clint Kennedy '76, and to Clint's immediate left is Tom Bower '73. I am guessing that this photo, with both a '73 and a '77 brother in it, was taken in early 1973 just before Tom Bower graduated but just as Clint Kennedy was either a pledge or perhaps shortly after initiation. The guy with the pinstripe suit, with his back to the camera, is, I think, Joe Czapski '76. Joe busted out after his sophomore year and never returned to Cornell.

Commentary by Michael J. Zak '75

Wow – a long time ago. That photo of me in white is circa late 1974, maybe early 1975. Can't recall the event. That's me with my senior year girl friend, Ellen, and I am sure we were having a good time.
The photo to my left includes Marcos C. Wilson '75, a classmate of mine, on the far left; then Paul D. Keenan '76, Eric J. Olsen '74, and Earl F. Rectanus '77. Four great guys. Marcos is a super, super guy who lives in DC now, I think. Keenan – I have lost track of. Eric Olsen, a wonderful guy, is dead of AIDS in DC. Turned out that Eric was gay and it probably cost him his life. I have a hilarious Eric Olsen story from after I graduated and went into the Marines. I visited Eric at his apartment in Alexandria one evening… someday over our third martini I'll tell you the story. Earl Rectanus was a “flower child” whose father was a 3-star Navy admiral in charge of Naval Intelligence. I actually have an original print of that photo – I'm looking at it now as I type this. If you look carefully between Olsen and Rectanus, in the background is Jim Hamilton '74 sticking his tongue out at the camera (Jim was like that…). Eric was, I think, house president at the time this photo was taken. I'd have a hard time proving it but I think that photo was taken at the time of the infamous “Great Gatsby” party in April of 1974 – that was one heluva party which, of course, the actives could never have today without being sued, jailed, or indicted. Or, we also had a theme party, as I recall, that adopted a “plantation” kind of message (Rum was the weapon of choice, I think)…
The photo at left bottom is probably a Victory Club – that looks like Chris Miles '76 in black tie at the table at the right and Gary Stirgwolt '76 with his head bent down into the camera.
The guy studying in the library looks like Chris Rutland '75, another classmate of mine.
Fun stuff – good years.

Commentary by Michael J. Zak '75 - updated May 2007

This was 1975. We put a lot of effort into getting a lot of alums back that fall and we succeeded. This photo did not capture everyone who was there and from appearances it was taken just prior to heading up the hill for the football game. I had graduated by then. I was 4-plus months into my four years in the Marines and I remember the weekend well. Second, although I remember gathering for this photo I had forgotten that we had taken it from the Chi Psi side of the goathouse. Once I got my bearings I took a shot at naming all the brothers in the photo. There are, sort of, three rows.
Starting from the left, seated: Arnaud Thieffrey '70; unknown; Ted Booth '25; unknown; Doug Bond '66; unknown; Jim Rice '30; Gil Rankin '55?; unknown; unknown; Todd Slotkin '74; Tim Lynch '74; Ron ? '77; Doug Jimerson '73; Charlie Temel '75.
Starting from the left, standing: Billy Noel '77; H. Jerome Noel '73.5; unknown; Wes Grove '73; Gordie Evans '68 (shit-hot USMC attack aircraft pilot, RVN veteran two tours); Mike Zak '75; Dean Dilley '77; Larry (Lawrence) Gottlieb ’77; Chris Bergen '76; Carlo Tanzi? '77; Tony Riley '77; Charlie Cavagnero; Drew Schaffran '77?; Lance Davis '76; Dick Taylor '65?; Robert Maroney '72; Michael Erie Thompson '77; unknown; Bob Green?; Tom Rothfels '76; Ron Schaefer; Earl Rectanus '77?; Rick Becker; unknown; Steve ?; Suhail Saad '77
Way in the back, up against the goat house, is Mark Underberg '77 standing behind and between Carlo Tanzi and Tony Reilly; Gary Stirgwolt '76 standing behind and between Lance Davis and Drew Schaffran; Paul D. Keenan '76 standing behind and between Dick Taylor and Robert Maroney; and Charlie Brodhead '76 standing behind Tom Rothfels. Xray, MZ
